Cyclists and councillors pledge support for safety campaign

Cyclists from as far afield as the Isle of Man, Portsmouth and Peterborough, took part in the Wallingford Festival of Cycling in Oxfordshire on Sunday, and lent their support for a new cycle safety campaign.

Hundreds of riders signed a special pledge committing to good behaviour, safe cycling and safe driving on the roads, a commitment mirrored by a team of drivers from Grundon Waste Management, which sponsored the event.

Among those who took advantage of the opportunity for a close-up look at all the technology Grundon installs on its Large Goods Vehicles (LGVs), were the Mayor of Wallingford, Councillor Rosslyn Lester and chairman of South Oxfordshire District Council, Councillor Paul Harrison.

Both sat inside one of the vehicles and experienced for themselves just what drivers can and can’t see from the cab, with blind spots demonstrated by a series of strategically-parked stationary bicycles.
